Hi I am a new member just need to know do I need to let anyone know if I plan to show up April 22 for the run You should have gotten an evite about it a few weeks ago... Of course, if you weren't on the mailing list at the time you wouldn't get it. Anyway... When in doubt e-mail director_of_trails@baystatejeepers.com and let Kurt know if you're coming or not. Nice Kev! Good job. Now we need to get a 'Shane' link stickied here someplace. max i assume you had the same problem as ttora, that led to people shutting the ne chapters web site, people finding the trails and calling police to bust the run...if not...can you believe that crap? on the forum and pretending to wheel, now they just tell about the trail and set up a meeting place. works great

ALL of Baystate's runs are legit. On a personal note, I have no tolerance for illegal wheeling and would give anyone h3ll, online or otherwise, for doing so. Ditto for wheeling the same spot every week. If people wheeled legally, no one would have anything to worry about.

ttora has no real reason to wheel illegally any more. most everyone on the forum used to but now we have found so many legal trails to wheel theres no real point. plus illegal trails arent really any good once you graduate from stock, they seem to be all mud and mud sucks. but the legal trails have so much more to offer and we have a much better time there, and if your options are wheel illegally alone, or legally with a group of friends/fellow wheelers, the choice is painfully simple. so i dont see myself going back...not to worry. but why give someone hell? it will just push them away, you could probably just offer them the choice and unless they are really dumb (inwhich case proceed with the hell) they would realize the legal are better. but in a perfect world all trails would be legal, people would be intelligent and we are far from that.

We as a club do not do any illegal trails as Joe stated. And the reason to give folks hell, well, because they are ruining it for those few trails that are still open. Bad PR and all that. Like the people that dump the garbage that we see out there...them wheelers must be doing it. NOT! We are usually the ones cleaning it all up.
I don't want to go wheeling anywhere that you can get fined or arrested for. Ya know...makes a great day really end poorly.

agreed, simply stating that if you can convert, before giving of said hell, then you have another helper to clean trails, furthermore, i could be wrong but i think people who dump on trails are not people who use them for recreation, simply people who know of the trail, and that they wont get caught dumping there. if only we could find them and dump the crap back on their own lawns.

true enough, but the "general" public probably thinks it's wheelers. They see folks like us coming and going....probably makes them think.

I have a question. What is the classification for off road jeeps. The definition of ORV or OHV is anything under 1000lbs. I've been looking around for legal places to wheel and every state park I've checked only classifies ATV and the like. In the past I've wheeled in conservation land (not wetlands) and never had a problem. I just can't find any classification for jeeps and trucks.

Please don't wheel on conservation land unless it's a legal road that travels through it. Unfortunately, there are no state operated areas for >1000 lb vehicles to recreate on in Massachusetts. Besides any Chapter 90 unmaintained roads that might offer a stock vehicle a challenge, the best thing to do would be to join an organized club that has access to private land. Power lines, and pretty much any trail in the woods is private property and requires written landowner permission. Check out the North East Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs website, of which Baystate Jeepers is a member. It's a great resource for land use. www.nea4wd.org/

You cannot (to my understanding) in MA take a Jeep/truck into a state Park. Maybe I'm wrong.
You CAN go to town halls, ask the clerk or Tax Assessor's office and ask them about Class VI roads that are open. They will even give you maps if you ask nicely...sometimes for a fee.
You CAN join a club that is reputable, and go wheeling legally with them.
Please do your homework, and try to atleast join a club that is in the NEA, or some organization that is wheeling legitimately.
AVOID clubs with a dictatorship style to them. AVOID clubs that allow drinking and wheeling, because it's even MORE ignorant than drinking and driving on the roads. Safety should always be first.

Thanks guys, I do plan on joining a club, possibly this one. I used to wheel on conservation land in my home town, practicly everyone in town wheeled there so I never thought about it. I appreciate the attitude you guys have about keeping the trails open and clean. When I'm ready to join a club I'll submit an application here first. By the way, I'm picking up my new Jeep tommorrow, '06 wrangler X, 4.0, six speed. It has a soft top, living in an apartment, I have no where to store a hardtop for the summer months.
