Some of you may have noticed the forum now having ad's. If your new, BSJ Pays to remove these ad's monthly. It costs us $7.00 per credit or 50,000 page views. A "credit" is only good for one calendar month or 50,000 page views, whichever comes first. This time of year when the forum gets a little busier those credits run out a little sooner then normal and since they don't carry credits over to the next month I don't purchase them until the first of the new month. So, this is why you may see ad's for a few days. Sorry for that inconvenience. They will disappear on the first of the month. BSJ members or forum members may purchase credits if they like but all the above applies to whomever buys them.

Is this related to hosting or the software?

Is there any way of subscribing to a thread so you get an email when someone adds a post to the thread?

We should just host our own forums off the BSJ website and have no ads for free....

If needed I would be willing to assist with this. I currently use vBulletin for my quad site www.ltr450racing.com, same software that jeep forum runs on. The only problem is, how to convert proboards to vBulletin.

The only problem is, how to convert proboards to vBulletin. That's been discussed here already, apparently it's not possible to export or convert Proboard's free product. Apparently because Proboard's is a paid service, they don't provide access to the raw db. Therefore you can't extract the proper info to convert (if you could extract the db, you would be able to convert). Also according to threads I have read, PB is PERL solution based off the YaBB 1.x source code . Others that have made the switch have basically closed their PB for posting and provided a link from vBulletin to maintain history. Since you stated that at one time someone has looked into converting, I am assuming that others have asked to switch. I don't want to suggest fixing something that doesn't need to be fixed, but would like to see how many other members would like to make the switch via a poll. The following are reasons I can think of that would be a benefit to switching. - Better overall user interface, controls - One time fee, non re-accruing cost (84$ a year + hosting for home page) - Photo Gallery (although most people have a photobucket/flicker account) - If PB goes out of business or raises their prices, you don't either loose your forum or are out of more money. - The longer you continue with a software that can be converted, the more married you are to that software, the more it will cost you to convert. - Manage donations/subscriptions via the forum software and paypal - Forum is indexed by google and appears in search results, more local folks can learn about the group

It can be done with a screen scraper and a couple of macro's to replicate the database. It wouldn't be perfect, but I could grab all the posts, sections, and user names in a few hours. All the structure settings (admins, staff groups, board passwords, etc etc) would have to be re-done, but thats not a huge deal. People have already made scripts for doing this in the past, which aren't that hard to use.... Ex. www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=727865

Poll has been created.
My opinion on this is and has always been, yes we should have a better forum with more user options for ease of use. This forum is very basic, even the smiles suck.
It has served its purpose and is very useful but I think we've outgrown it.
IMO, a new forum should be created on a better format and this one should be locked for read only. There are also LOTS of users (forum members) who haven't logged in for years. I personally wouldn't waste the time to try and convert (scrape) it.
If it's for read only we would have to stop paying for ad free.
