I have the chance to pick up a 98 XJ for short money in really nice shape- except it needs (at least) a head gasket. Assuming I have the head checked and it's not cracked, any advice from someone who's done this job?
Other than labeling everything and hitting the manifold bolts with a ton of PB blaster, it doesn't look like it's that difficult. Am I wrong?

Never did a 4.0 head gasket but I've done my share of small blocks. From my experience yeah, you pretty much nailed it. Maybe plan on snapping a few exh manifold bolts, drilling and tapping or at least have a few E-Z outs handy..... but NBD

The manifold(s) bolts on 4.0L's/2.5L's are not typically an issue.
I did a head gasket on my '89 and every bolt came off easily.
Good luck fishing your hands in to get to the bottom few in the back.

X2 The hardest part is getting to the lower manifold bolts. Other than that it's pretty straight forward. Be sure to get the intake properly lined up on the dowel pins when re-assembling and make sure it's sitting flat and flush against the head before tightening the bolts.

A 9/16" swivel socket is a great thing to have when removing the manifold bolts. The one head stud you might have an issue with is the one that's on the driver's side in the front. That bolt passes through the water jacket and have been known to snap (ask me how I know). Pick up a Chilton's manual.
