I broke the stock Dana 35 axle on my 98 TJ. It had to be pulled on 3 wheels for a bit, so there may be other damage to the end that had no wheel.
I was thinking of having the whole axle replaced with a Dana 44, rather than just repair what is there. I see prices in the $2000 range for a complete Dana 44 axle with a Detroit Locker.
Recommendations?

My 8.8 cost me $1600 to get it replace every thing and install it The TJ brackets are a 1/4 in thick and the welding cost the most Checkout Bone yards for 8.8 Mine was out of a 200 mountianeer the explorer have them I think the best years are 97 + up the have better axles a 31 spline I could be mistaken on the year
Mine cost me $350 it had 44k on it I used the axles+ thats it The guts all got replaced with 456 gears + detroit like a new 8.8 No issues at all running 36 in IROKs very hard That is about the limit for a a stock 8.8 with no alloys a 44 is 35in tires the tires chage alot from 35s -36s in weight My IROKs were 15lbs a piece heavier now with beadlocks I and at 120lbs a piece for tire +rim
I dont think a D 44 would handle that
Or get a new 9in they are around 2500 I think

Superman, you forgot to mention Super 44 with 33 spline shaft or really super-fy it to 35 spline! Man I can see those ring gear teeth falling off! ;D

My tires weigh 150lbs ea. I run 30 spline Alloy. Thats alloys they are 30% stronger that 30 spline alloy is stronger than my 31 spline stock axle My front is a D 30 hp with alloys The 30 will handle a 35in tire but I always ovaled out the stub shaft u joints holes with 35s I had to change stub shafts or break each axle once a year The point I was trying to make a 8.8 is cheaper+ stronger than a 44

The point I was trying to make a 8.8 is cheaper+ stronger than a 44 In some areas it is stronger, but not all. The tubes can spin in the housing and the carrier bearing caps flex. When it comes time to compare serviceability and replacement part cost, the Dana 44 is hard to beat (in the half ton axle group). Everyone has their opinions and unique experiences though and the 8.8 is a nice axle that can serve well in just about any Jeep. DVM, I just sold a TJ Dana44 rear for $400.00. The deals are out there! Scan the local Craigslists and 4x4 forums.
