Death wobble finally made me go to a mechanic. He told me the tie rod ends and ball joints on my 2007 JK were wearing out and could be part of but not causing the problem. He thinks a weak steering stabilizer is the most likely problem which is leading to the wear on the ball joints and tie rod ends. I am going to replace the steering stabilizer myself. how difficult would it be for a newbie to replace the other parts? Also, does this sound like a reasonable diagnosis?

Death Wobble is one of the toughest things to figure out. If it were me, I'd take it to Lou at Elias 4WD center. After talking it over with him, he gave me the best plan of attack for death wobble that I've heard so far.
Go ahead and replace your steering stabilizer yourself - the stock ones are kinda weak and it may help. As far as tie rod ends and ball joints - if you're a newbie I'd say it's time for a wrenchfest. Don't worry about it for the stabilizer, but for everything else plan on getting a alignment right away.

The steering stabilizer will only mask a bigger problem. I can't see how an 07 would already need ball joints. Is it out of warranty?
X2 on bringing it to Lou.

FWIW, I have unbalanced 38x15.5" Claws with no steering stabilizer. I have absolutely no death wobble or weirdness.
Have Lou check the ball joints and tie rods. Personally, I'd look at the track bar, as this item takes an incredible amount of stress on a steering axle. Look at the relation between the track bar and tie rod. They should be as parallel as possible.

yes out of warranty. 58,000 miles. mostly highway. mechanic said there was about 1/4 inch of play in the tie rod ends when he squeezed them with pliers. and the ball joints seemed worn but not gone

A 1/4 inch of play would cause it When you get tie rod ends get Moog ends they have a life time warranty They replace them no questions asked I have bent the ends where they screw onto the tie rod but still the ball joints been 100% LOL

The loose parts are more likely to cause death wobble... The steering stabilizer will just mask it. Sounds like your mechanic doesn't really understand (modified) suspensions. JW

FWIW I was just reading in the latest JP mag that the ball joints in the JK D30's, D44's, and some '07+ Dodge vehicle (can't remember which one) were junk and wore out quickly. Someone was making an HD ball joint for these vehicles. I'll see if I can find the article when I get home.
