Lynnlee is still looking for a Jeep and she found a 90 Wrangler SE for $1,100 but the ad says "engine needs a re-build" I have a rough idea what that entails but no idea on cost. I am also thinking rebuilding a 4 cyl is a waste of time. In the one picture he posted, I am asking for more, the body looks to be in great shape and it has a lift kit and oversize tires. The tires appear to be 31s and A/Ts so I am thinking it was probably a DD that was just built a little for appearance.
The other issue is that we need to get this on the road asap since snow is coming. Is this a sensible project to take on that can be ready in short time?

That would be the easiest thing to do. Engine rebuilding is a dying art with crate engines. I was quoted $1700 to rebuild my 4 popper a couple years ago. I found a '95 2.5L with 38K miles for $700. It's the engine currently in my rig. A 2.5L can easily be swapped out in a day. Get a new clutch/slave/throwout bearing while you're in there.

Seems to me $1100 is a lot for a 19 yr old Jeep w/ a bad 4-cyl engine. If you can get the price down it may be worth it.

I'd be into this wrench fest!
Almost two different worlds but the crate engine with all the fixings cost me almost $3k for the 350ci I had just looked up a stroker for the XJ the other day. price was crazy! Over $3,500!

I'd go the boneyard engine route.
You might want to keep looking for a rig though. As I recall, the '90 2.5 engine was a TBI job while '91 up uses MPI (a little more power there).
If you can get the price dropped down then I'd go for it if the body, frame and rest of the drivetrain is good.
