I know to some of you this might seem like weird question, but how do I find out what kind of diffs. my XJ has. I would like to get some protection for them, but don't want to buy the wrong ones. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Eric

What year is it?
You most likely have a dana 30 front and a Chry. 8-1/4" rear....
Some XJ's have dana 44 rear ends, but I think that was limited to '87-'89.

If you have ABS brakes you have D35 rear. Without ABS you could have either 8-1/4" or D35 but most likely 8-1/4" if your XJ is a '97-'01 model.

It's a 2000 XJ with ABS.

yup.... you have the TURDY5 in back and the LP30 up front
-Nick
Oh you CAN find a ChryCo 8.25 from a 2000-2001 and get a decent 29 spline axle.... has been said to be almost as strong as a STOCK D44

This isn't exactly what you asked, but it is the next thing you may want to know about - Which diff guards???
For my '98 XJ's front D30 I bought a Warn diff guard for $65... For my C8.25 rear I bought a BlueTorch Fabworks cover (is indestructable 1/4" plate) which cost ~$150.
I know Nick runs the Crane High Clearance covers on his XJ which are awsome, but pricey ($190 when I looked last year). I've seen a bunch of reviews on the CHC covers that say they're indestructable.
The Warn guard is solid (I've hit mine pretty hard and it doesn't have any damage/deformation) and comes with new grade-8 12 pt bolts. It is a "medium duty" cover guard that fits over your stock diff cover and protects the diff well. It does have a tendancy to pick up dirt/mud (but that doesn't hurt anything). I talked to several other people in the club who run them before I bought them who seemed happy.
I suggest staying away from the "rock ring" type guards that only cover the left side of the diff cover... I don't think they provide adequate protection (IMHO).

Jon is absolutely right about the ROOOOOCKless rings.... they ONLY protect the Ring itself and outside of the dif.... I do have the Crane on the front of mine (looking to get one for the 8.25 this spring) and i have hit it MANY times and that thing barely even loses paint.... for the price i do like the Blue Torch, but i have been very impressed with my crane, and think im gonna stick with that.... I have no experience with the Warn's, but have bolted a set of rusty's up to a Rubi and was impressed with them...

Thanks for all the input. This club ROCKS!!! All puns intended. I'll probably go with the Warn's because I will want the extra protection since this Jeep needs to get me to work weekdays. Thanks again for the help. Eric

Eric, Just to jump in here for a second - you should also look at the Rockcrusher diff covers: northridge4x4.com/products.php?id=650They are beefy and the price isn't too bad at $125 each. Dom may have them in stock - give him a call. I just bought 2 off him and have just finished painting them - ready for a warmer day for install. See an install article at: www.4x4xplor.com/rockcrusher.htmlAsk Dom about a discount for BSJ members. I'm not sure about that but it's worth asking. Tell him I told you. max

Back on topic...I've run the Warn diff guards on my last two Jeeps, and now on the Rubi. Never a question when a rock is hit as to the diff being protected. Cheap insurance if you ask me.

Doug, Christina, the kids, and I are going to be there saturday. My father in-law has the shops. I get the "family" discount on everyday wear and tear parts. My brother in-law lends his expertice on sundays when the shop is closed. It's heated so that is a plus nowadays. I'm not sure what area you're from, but the shops are in N. Attleboro, Mansfield, Seekonk, Warwick R.I. and Woonsocket R.I. See you at the meeting. Eric

I have the Warn skids also.... and I like them. For the price, they can't be beat.
I have bent the upper part of my front one - not sure how a rock got way up there, but it did!

I have to do a job down in Seekonk in the next couple of weeks. We'll talk Saturday. ;D
