Rule one: On an XJ this old, PB Blaster and a heat wrench is your friend. Looks like you have some of the classic rust where the DS floor bends up to the fire wall. The rest of the under side looks pretty good. Pick up a universal cat and a Dynomax cat back exhaust and you'll be good for a while there. Or pony up for a universal stainless muffler and get just the Dynomax tail pipe. Pull and toss the rear swaybar!!!!!!!!!! They're only good for limiting articulation If you're doing the mild lift and cutting for tire clearance, try and stick with a 10.5" wide tire. They'll stuff into the wheel wells better. Front disconnects for the swaybar or just pull it also and take it easy on the exit ramps.

Looks like a good start. Let me know if you want a hand with mods. Slush box for a tranny but I won't give too much of a hard time. Glad to see you will be back on the trail soon.

Especially on the PB blaster, always start there days in advance of the project actually beginning! If you wanted to shell some $$$ you could put a coat of POR 15 on the underside to help stop the rust and make it last a bit longer.

Scott - Looks good... I see you managed to score a D35! I have a few parts that may be useful to you... Front mount 2" receiver you can use for a tow-point that I think fits... I think I have an older tranny skid (left over from Kevin W's XJ), an intake for a newer 4.0L... Not sure if yours is one of the years that can benefit from that swap. I also have a Warn D30 diff guard I'm looking to sell. There may be other stuff in my garage I'm not thinking of. I also recomend sticking with a 10.5" wide tire, as John C suggested... The parts that I had the most trouble with on my XJ were the rear shocks and the sway bar brackets (installing disconnect studs into the axle brackets). JW

Scott - Looks good... I see you managed to score a D35! The rear is an 8.25, it has the flat bottom shape like a stop sign. It would be a 27 spline unless it had a new (97+) 8.25 swapped in. Definately try to find a gas tank skid.

Sleeve the tie rod. That one looks a little bent ;P
I've got a set of RockRatz rocker armor kicking around if you're interested.

how cheap did you score this jeep? does the A/C still actually work? riding in comfort haha If the pumps good and the rest of the A/C is shot, you'll have a nice OBA system

how cheap did you score this jeep? does the A/C still actually work? riding in comfort haha $700. AC does not engage. It will be an air compressor if I get my way with it. I have a few parts that may be useful to you... You wouldn't happen to have a D44, would you? ;D The rear is an 8.25, it has the flat bottom shape like a stop sign. It would be a 27 spline unless it had a new (97+) 8.25 swapped in. Definitely try to find a gas tank skid. It is a 27 spline. Gas Tank skid is on the list. The straps on there now are about to rot off. What's that gauge, by the drivers side door, under the dash? Temp. Glad they put it in a high visibility area. Sleeve the tie rod. That one looks a little bent ;P I've got a set of RockRatz rocker armor kicking around if you're interested. I'd be interested in seeing them. I was thinking of building some new rockers with square tube stock. how cheap did you score this jeep? does the A/C still actually work? riding in comfort haha If the pumps good and the rest of the A/C is shot, you'll have a nice OBA system See above quote. ;D Thanks for all the tips! I actually can't wait to tear into it.

Looks like a good place to start Scott. I miss my 2dr XJ.
I agree with John on the rear sway bar.
If the discos are the same for a TJ as an XJ I may have a set you can have...JKS for 3" lift.
Keep us up to date with your build.

I was thinking of building some new rockers with square tube stock. The RockRatz units basically wrap around the rocker panel. Here's their link www.rockratz.com/cherokeebodyprot.html They work good and don't kill ground clearance. If your rockers are solid, I'd hold off on tubing them. You can check the A/C pump by disconnecting the electrical lead off the pump and touching it to the battery's positive side to check that the clutch engages and the pump turns.

You wouldn't happen to have a D44, would you? ;D Yes, I do have an XJ D44 sitting in my garage... ;D Not sure I want to sell it though... I got a killer deal on it from a yard in Plastow NH for $100. I also appear to have given away the skid plate... JW
