Kurt... if he is replacing his ujoints, anything he needs to know regarding new ones?? Nothing special to know. We'll need a big socket to get the axle nuts off with and a good impact gun. I'll toss them in my tool box before hearing over. A 13mm 12 point socket is needed to remove the 3 hub bolts and if IIRC a 10 mm for the brake caliper bolts. I should have those with me and more. Removing the old hub is always a PITA. I'll show you a couple of tricks for removing them We'll need some anti-seize for re-assembly and some sandpaper to clean up the knuckle bore. Also a shop vac for cleaning out the axle tubes of all the crud in them before re-assembly. And we'll need a couple of quarts of gear oil to re-fill the diff. And as always... lots of PB

I am waiting for final approval from my other 1/2... Assuming I get it I plan to pack my tools, which includes a 36mm socket & 12-pt 13mm sockets as well.
I also have a ball joint press set I'll bring.
In addition to what Kurt suggested I'd recommend having some PB Blaster or other penetrating oil on hand as well as some brake cleaner + towels. We'll need to be sure we have extra/new cotter pins for the castle nuts too.
Some brake grease (for slide pins/pads) is nice to have too... I think I have a tube and will bring it if I can find it.
Are the ball joints or u-joints greasable? If so we will also need a grease gun + grease before you drive off.
If you can, soak down the all the bolts you can see/reach in the axle knuckles Saturday night w/ penetrating oil... Can't hurt and might help.

I still need to pick up the ball joints and the tool for them, the are in stock at AutoZone. Will make sure I have break grease and some fresh grease in the grease gun. Got the spicer greaseable u's from Lou. will grab new votter pins as well.
Got some PB blaster and will hit it tonight and saturday. Got a good bag of rags and will grab some brake cleaner. Im changing out the rotors and pads, is it just good practice to give em a cleaning?
Thakns again! Jeff

I got permission to come on Sunday, so I'm definitely in.
I will bring my ball joint press kit with me. Wouldn't hurt to get the rental anyway -- the one I have isn't great.
I always wipe off the brake pads and rotors with a rag soaked in brake cleaner...
You also want brake cleaner to wipe down any bolts / nuts / etc... that you soak in penetrating oil... The brake cleaner washes out the penetrating oil and makes it harder for the bolts to vibrate loose.

Jeff, The Excavation guy is that Wayne L. ? I am curious if I know of whom you speak. Not able to help this wekend. :-( Yes it is, live right next door to him and his equipment. Let me grade my backyard this summer with one of his toys. Too Funny, I own property next to him in Maine and know him through friends. Yeah he is a GREAT guy! Say Hello for me sometime, it's been a while. Dave "SKI"

A Big thanks to Chris, Kai and especially Jon for their help yesterday. overall it was a very successful wrench fest with only minor drama/carnage at the end. I now have a drivable jeep with inspection tires!
We had a minor malfunction with the u-joint install where we popped a cap on the u-joint with the 50 ton press trying to get a c-clamp on. Luckily Jon had a spare set of TJ axles (and some inspection tires for sale) so we took a detour to borrow the axles and pick up the tires in the early evening.
I still have to deal with two u-joints for the front axle down the road, but the heep is now drivable. Once I trace out the rear passenger backup light I can get it inspected and it should pass.
We did the ball joints, replaced the hub assembly, rotors and pads. A long day of work but I learned a lot and cant thank you guys enough!

Jeff, Great to hear that you and your help had good success yesterday and that the heep is driveable. Let me know if you want a hand any evening this week to work on any lingering issues. I assume you have the front axle shafts out. If you want I can stop by some evening and either give you a hand changing the joints or I can bring them home and do them for you and drop them back off when done.

Unfortunately, after getting the joints in we figured out that at least 2 of the axle shaft ear sets appear to be pressed inwards a little and need to be straitened to allow installation of the C-clips. We were trying to "encourage" a C-clip to fit when we broke a u-joint cap... ooops...

I assume you have the front axle shafts out. If you want I can stop by some evening and either give you a hand changing the joints or I can bring them home and do them for you and drop them back off when done. The original axles are out and Jons are seated in place. I still need to do the pinon seals and u-joints in the axle. Have the parts for that but need to get a new spicer U joint for the busted drive shaft u joint cap. part. Last inspection related issue is the passengers backup light. no power at the bulb so either a bad connection at the bulb or the wire is broken along the way. hoping to get plates for it tomorrow and if I have an easy day at work may be able to resolve the backup light. If not I may bother you Wednesday night... thanks! Jeff
