Will you be at the fall meeting this Saturday? I can bring it. I'll be there, but i wasn't planning on bringing the XJ. is it cool if i grab it from you next weekend? sounds like another wrenchfest! And dude - if you have any more cutting planned, you know my number! Seriously, I never did anything like swapping out a rear diff. But if you need help, give me a call. I'm always looking to learn new stuff. And it's cool to see your beater being transformed into a trail beast! If you wanna come up and hang out while its done, the more the merrier! I'm thinking i'll be able to finish up the driver side cutting tomorrow after the meeting and then start (hopefully finish too) the passenger side sunday morning. The wife is working both nights, so we'll see how much i can get in before she heads out.

Got home early from work today and its finally a gorgeous day. I finished folding up the drivers side rear Finished the front drivers side, leaving a little meat below the headlight. Also found some bondo the previous owner patched up the rocker panels with. The ripped off the flares from the passenger side. Made the slices in the rear first then folded them in. (Sorry for the angle, my neighbors car was in he way and i'm too lazy to move the XJ) Then started cutting the front. didn't mark it off with tape, but did the same as the other side, little bits at a time. Its a little off compared to the other side, lucky for me its hard to see both sides at once!

I went to Hollands $75 all you can carry special, and went home empty handed. The door i scouted was already gone, the seats were waterlogged and smelly, and i forgot to look for a steering column!
I went through and snugged all the suspension bolts Carl and I were playing with, still tight, so thats good (i guess). Talked to Kai, and i'll be meeting him in the AM to pick up the 8.25! just need to order U-bolts for it.
The whole reason for this post/update is a question.
How strong is the 242? would i be better off looking for a 231 to replace it? They seem to be pretty cheap and readily available in the junkyard and on part outs. What would i have to get with it?

The 242 is a decent case. If it's working well, there's no real need to swap it out. If you do grab a 231, make sure to get the shift linkage and handle.

Some info if you want to know (more) about an NV242... www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np242.htmIt may be worth finding out how hard an SYE kit is (if you think that is in your future) to install... Fairly straight forward with a -231, but I never looked at installation in a -242 before. JW

i think its something i'll need to look into. I just drove down to Franklin and back to grab Kai's 8.25 (thanks Kai!) and it rode pretty well, but i have the feeling if i go any higher, its going to need an SYE.
Plus, it hangs really low, and i doubt i'll need the full time 4wd ever. Theres no immediate and absolute need for swapping it out, just trying to cover all my bases.

back from the dead (with a question, not an update)
Anyone know offhand what size the rear brakes (drum) for a chrysler 8.25 are? i'm looking online at autozone, and they have 9" or 10". i guess i could go outside tomorrow in the bitter cold, remove the tire and measure, but web wrenching is much more cozy than the alternative! its a 29 spline if that makes a difference

Paul, I pretty sure the drums are 9". Since you have to buy all new parts for the drum brakes, it might make more sense to just go to the JY and pick up a set of ZJ disc.

Salvage the parts (backing plate & dust shield, bolts, calipers, flex lines) from a late 90s WJ w/ D35 disc brakes and they are easily installed on a C8.25. Expect to replace e-brake shoes, disc, & pads. You'll need to mod the e-brake cables or replace them... Ford 8.8 YJ conversion cables work fine. JW

Finally got around to ordering some much needed items.
1.) adjustable front trackbar 2.) U-bolts for the 8.25 3.) Driver and passenger side replacement rocker panels. The ones on the XJ are toasted.
I looked at some write-ups online about using 2x3 box tubing to replace the rot, but its out of my league at this moment. The replacements will probably out last the rest of the jeep.
Thanks for the advice on using ZJ calipers and discs, i think i'm just going to swap over the existing drums (instead of buying all new hardware) for the time being, in the spring or mid-summer i'll swap over to discs.

With the weather we've been having I wouldn't be in a hurry to be out scrounging in a pick-n-pull yard either... JW
