Full article with pics: www.theage.com.au/drive/motor-news/military-drive-for-jeep-20091027-hi8j.html Chrysler pushing to get the Jeep back into the military. The Jeep could be on the verge of making a return to its roots: serving in the US army. While today the vehicles are mainly used by suburban mums and dads making the run to school, jeeps got their start in life during World War II when they were used by US forces in a range of situations. They earned a reputation for being able to take punishment, but eventually were dropped from active service. Now Chrysler is pushing for a modern version of the Jeep to again serve in the military. At the recent Association of the US Army's annual conference the brand's Jeep Government and Military Sales division put on display a kitted out J8 Jeep (similar to the image below), complete with camouflage paint job and armaments. According to defensetech.org, the J8 is a military version of the Jeep Wrangler. The company is pitching the J8 as a light patrol or border patrol vehicle, personnel or cargo carrier, comms vehicle or ambulance.
