"A Wrangler diesel is offered overseas but will switch to Fiat engines next year. Hopefully, Fiat will start bringing these diesels to the U.S., too. "It's not set in stone. It's stupid too, because diesel is where it's at. Power, mileage, reliability and durability. I don't when the US automakers are going to realize this. Maybe after a couple more billion $....

Jeep brand:
Going Away:
- Jeep Compass and Patriot: Will be consolidated into a new vehicle that will debut in 2013. Until that time, both vehicles will undergo "major modifications" next year
- Jeep Commander: Going away as of the end of 2010, with "international reallocation" for the vehicle occurring around the same time. This could mean that the Commander would live on in a different country with different equipment.
New Products:
- Jeep Wrangler: New diesel model in the end of 2010
- New Small SUV: 2013 launch, appears to be even smaller than the Patriot and Compass and will likely be imported from Fiat.
- New small crossover: 2013 launch, consolidating both the Compass and Patriot, imported from Fiat.
- Jeep Liberty: Will be replaced by a Fiat product in 2013, but will likely carry on the Liberty name
- Jeep Grand Cherokee: New model debuts in the end of 2010 as a 2011 model

I swear I've heard of a diesel Wrangler a couple years out for the last 10 years...
Now, if they do finally bring one to market, I might just have to go get one.

If the diesel they use is anything like the one in the WK then the engien will be almost completely unsupported by the aftermarket...

JW If they roll this out and it sells the aftermarket will come around.  Joe, It was reported in an 8 hour meeting yesterday that the diesel JK will be introduced at the end of 2010. |

JW i have a feeling that if the new jeep diesel engines catch on then the aftermarket will be quick to follow. there seems to be a lot of people waiting for a diesel wrangler, so if those start selling well the aftermarket would be stupid to not jump on it. |

i have a feeling that if the new jeep diesel engines catch on then the aftermarket will be quick to follow. I agree the key will be volume... However, I'm not convinced a diesel option will sell in volume. I think there are several key reasons for this... #1) I think there is a small market segment which will want it (e.g. people like us) #2) I think it will likely be a pricey option (diesels add significant cost in pickups and it was a +$3235 option in the WK in the Laredo trim package) that people won't want #3) I don't think the majority of consumers in the US will (IMHO) recognize the value -- especially if there is a cheaper V8 option (as there was with the WK) We will have to wait and see... they're going to have to get creative if they want to sell high volumes. i only started getting into jeeps a little over a year ago. before that time i didn't even know a diesel existed in a jeep in the u.s... jeep needs to advertise a little better.
if they can manage to squeeze 9-10 more mpg out of it like vw did with the tdi golf (est 25 vs 34) and actually advertise that fact they might have some people in the showrooms looking at jeeps that were previously turned off because of the notoriously poor mpg ratings. 28mpg wrangler? sign me up! not likely, but who knows what they'll come up with.
they might shoot themselves in the foot if they come out with both a diesel and a v8. it sounds like people like us want something other than the I-6 or V6, so if they came out with a diesel a lot of us would like the diesel. if they came out with a V8 then we'd want the V8. if they came out with both then the response to one may take away from the other. they need to pick one option (for now anyway) and go with it 100%. the company can't afford any more f-ups. it'll be interesting to see what direction they take.

Personally, I always felt the I6 had (has?) plenty of power... I don't know about the V6, but I'm not looking for more in my XJ. Good point about fuel economy... That is important... I think that is another failure of the WK CRD -- 20-22 mpg isn't going to wow people. JW |
