has anyone heard of cryogenics for hardening thier axles and gears?

Yep. Cryo-n' is very popular with the hardcore crowd.
I've been thinking about getting my front 4340's done. The cryo treatment brings the components down to -300*F.
Ujoints can also be done.

I've heard of it being done for various industrial processes... never looked into having it done though.

I recall having seen an article in one of the wheeling rags about doing it.
Not sure if the cost vs. benefit is worth it on a DD/weekend warrior though.

I've heard of doing it on D30 r&p's when running 4.88's due to the vulnerability of the pinion gear at that ratio. Bobby Long will do an r&p for like $50 or so I think.
