Just wondering if anyone has run into the same problem as me... I have a 2004 Rubicon with 10,000 miles. I have been hearing a pinging noise from the engine (like you hear when you use cheap gas) while the engine is under heavy load - not all the time. I brought it back to the dealer to take a look at it, and they too heard the pinging. Here is what they said: "Checked all specs. All Ok. No codes or technical service bulletins. Checked the CAM and Crank Sync. Was 12 degrees; should be 0 degrees. Technician made adjustment on the CAM sensor to 0 degrees. Road tested and repair is verified." Unfortunately, I can still hear the pinging from time to time. I use only brand name gas (Mobil or Shell - 87 octane). I don't think I should have to buy 89 or better on a brand new vehicle. Anyone else run into this same problem? Joe...... ping......ping......

I'd have to hear it to tell you. Generally, you hear pinging (or detonation) under load and not at idle. There is a knock sensor that retards timing when the engine starts to ping. New engines run more on the lean side for economy reasons. If the dealer made some adjustments and it's all in spec, then you should be all set. If you want, try some 89 gas for a while and see if it goes away. If it does, return to the dealer and explain your concern. Maybe they could plug in and reset yout initial timing via the ECM.

I get a "ping" when I'm in a gear that's too high for the situation... is that the same thing you have? If I go like 30 mph and put it in fifth, I get major pinging noises. But I don't think that has anything to do with engine problems, just being in the wrong gear. On the other hand, I have the stupid hesitation issue which is well known on 03+. I have had the dealer try several things and I've tried everything I've read about on the internet. Still got it. Its annoying but I got used to it.... KEV

We have a friend that has had lots of Rubi 04 issues. Course, they beat on theirs a bit more than we do. It's dissappointing to hear of these things, mine has had none of that yet.

Ahh...2.5L four cylinder...no pinging,...no issues... It only hesitates when it knows it has to push those 35's up long highway hills...and then I say "please, please, baby...motor them tiar's up the hill". and it does, just for me ;D I would buy a Rubicon if you could get one with a four cylinder, granny tranny, and 4.88's...I'd check off the box for the dent package too.

kev, i have the exact same hesitation issue. i have heard that his is common also. i floor it, and it feels like a 2-3 second turbo lag, then the power kicks in. annoying, ESPECIALLY in the snow, makes me feel like i have an automatic and no control again...

KEV - I've got "ping", luckily no hesitation - yet anyway... Only when I am in the wrong gear (at least that is only when I can HEAR it over the other engine noises and tires...). Thanks for the info guys. Good to know I am not the only one with the problem... Joining this jeep club thing was definitely a good idea.... Thanks, guys. Can't wait 'til Christmas....I have a PRETTY good idea Santa brought a lift this year....

I got that center sub-woofer option, it works nicely cutting out any engine noise ;D
