So the last three mornings, my jeep has been making a loud squeel noise for the first few minutes of driving. Hard to tell, but the sound seems to be coming from the transmission/tcase area. It doesn't sound like a belt from the engine.
Also, it only happens when driving. Won't do it if I just rev the engine up and down.
Does it at about 2,000 - 4,000 rpm only. Either when applying gas or letting off.
Goes away after everything seems to warm up.
Any ideas???

Hey Kev, I guess I would need to hear the sound to make a better diagnosis. 1) Do you let the Jeep warm up before you drive (at least a few minutes)? 2) Does it only do it during the extreme cold? 3) Does you 'Rubi have a double cardan driveshaft? Any weird vibes? It sounds like something in the drivetrain. Especially as it only happens during a specific RPM range. My guess is a u-joint that may have been contaminated or damaged. Once it warms up, the bearings and caps expand and the sounds goes away(or at least lessens). Check it out. It's just a longshot guess but you never know. At least you can hear it. All I hear from 2000-4000rpm is gear whine from my SM420.

Yea, I'm thinking its my front driveshaft. Once it warms up and starting turning the seals/grease wear in the noise goes away. I also found a TSB for a grommet between the body and the tcase that makes a similar sound. But sadly I realized it was only for Autos Gonna try spraying some WD40 on the joints on the weekend before driving, to see if the sound goes away. KEV

Hmmm, did some more research on ROF... Looks like alot of people get it and they are blaiming the front driveshaft. Didn't make any noises today, as it was around 30. Seems like it needs to be less then about 20-25 degrees then it will squeek/hiss. I love jeeps! Where's my daily driver hiding?? KEV

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the front driveshafts on new TJ's are a double cardan style at the t-case end? The "locating" ball in the center of the cardan joint needs periodic grease and more maintenance than a regular u-joint. You should be able to buy a needle attachment for your grease gun and lube it up. Hey, at least your TJ only squeeks and hisses. My YJ burbs, farts, and makes bzzzzzzt...clack...dingalingaling noises. That all means it's working correctly.

Yes, It has a CV Joint with centering ball. I have a feeling that its a non-servicable joint though. The factory sucks! My rear CV joint is servicable and I have greased it a few times. It may be the rear one as well. Its pretty hard to tell where noises are coming from. Its not really cold, so I'm happy for now KEV
