this is why, when i get a winch, i am getting synthetic winch rope immediately. can we make sure that everyone in the club who doesn't at least has a heavy blanket for their steel cable for both their safety and everyone elses on the trail? i would hate for this to happen to anyone here. yes, the chances of this happening are small, but, man, the pic says it all, not for the faint of heart... www.jeepaholics.com/support/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=45514&SearchTerms=

Wimp. Walk it off...
I'm not surprised it was infected for a year. Since when can you pose for pics during reconstructive leg surgery? That's some Mexican Voodoo Medicine.

Lots of things are required, some just make common safety sense. Course, not everything is common sense to everyone.

YUP ;D ;D ;D And my si just came in the other day too. I've already talked to Scott at rockstomper and I'm going to upgrade it to a 3/8 100' line instead. Hey, does anyone know if they make black aluminum fairleads? or are guys just painting the silver ones black?

i think offroadoverstock.com had some black anodized fairleads, which would probably last a lot longer then a painted one would. there are also thermoplastic fairleads out there...

Kel, I have no idea what I'm doing but will let you know. Did you get any hardware with the fairlead? The web site says it's included, but there wasn't any in the box.

Well, then they didn't think to put it in the box. 2 lines, 2 Fairleads...no hardware. You want me to get involved?

Doug, I'm returning it to upgrade it to the 3/8. So, guess I am using it. (in a way)
Shoot! forgot to send it to Scott, I'll have to get to the post office tonight.

Anyone know what the effect of the synthetic line breaking would be and whether it is likely to reduce risk of injury? Early in my career I worked on a case where a piece of polypropelene line was stretched to the breaking point when a tug moved away from a large ship. The line stetched to the breaking point and the rebound sliced a crewmember's arm off-throwing it about 100 feet into the air. If there is a safety benefit, I would probably change to the synthetic as well, but I am sure it has its risks as well. It certainly doesn't fray and cause loose strands to tear gloves-and hands!

i have never seen this personally, but supposedly when synthetic breaks it just drops to the ground. i believe this is because it is made to stretch as little as possible (and therefore store as little energy as possible) where as cable will stretch, storing energy that is released when it breaks, causing it to lash around and cause injury. i think that polyproplyene will stretch, which is why it caused that injury. has anyone seen a synthetic rope break?
