Ventured into water/mud hole that was a bit deeper than planned Like water flowing over the door sills into the Jeep. Had to rock the Jeep and finally was able to back out after several tries. Was unable from that point on to get the clutch to disengage. Pedal feels OK, fluid is full. Made the drive home interesting. Flushed the clutch out last night for about 5 minutes with the garden hose until clear water ran out. Did this with the engine off and then with the engine on with the clutch pedal depressed. Was about 80% better but still does not fully dis-engage. Cannot shift into gear at a stop... Jeep creeps ahead a bit with the clutch depressed and in gear.. Thoughts?? Suggestions ?? (besides don't play in deep water Kurt

It's your YJ, right? AX15 with internal slave? With this design, the only thing I can think of is the throwout bearing is sticking on the input bearing retainer. Either that, or maybe (unlikely) you broke a spring on the pressure plate. I used to have a AX5 (AX15's little brother) and can't remember how much you could see in there with the inspection cover off. You could always try disconnecting the Crank Position Sensor and peak in while someone steps on the clutch. Final thought...maybe it's just time for a new clutch??? Unfortunately, without taking it apart.....you know the rest. Good luck.

Yup, the my 92 YJ with the internal slave. I put a new clutch, pressure plate & slave in about 18 months ago. I hope they are OK... The clutch went from working perfect before the water/mud hole to crap upon exiting the water. Flushing it with water made a good improvement but not quite enough. Could there be crud stuck on the clutch disc that flushing with water can't remove? Don't wanna pull the clutch out unless necessary. I've done it 4x before...

so my clutch isn't happy either from my last trip at ma bell. how did you flush it out? it has been a while so it is probably nice and dry, but i bet there is still some debris between the clutch plates. oh yeah, so i had a gut feeling (and found out on friday once the weather got hot) that i also fried the thermal fan clutch as well. good times...

I was able to shoot water thru the clutch hydraulic line pass thru in the bell housing. The rubber bushing around the lines is missing so there is about a 1" hole.
I am going to try more flushing tonight.

You might try operating the pedal while flushing, might knock some of that stuff off.

Now go figure, I've entered that hole at least six times over the years (only made it thru once)!!! My BA-10 never had clutch problems, the AX-15 I run now never had any problems. If you have to pull the tranny, let me know, and I'll give you a hand. John

Can I try and rake my garage out first!?!?!? BTW, the parts wagon left today, only to be replaced with a '92 2door XJ for parts!!! Biggest problem for parts is that it's 2WD On the good side, the front fenders and hood have no dents in them (yet)

Do you want to do the 8.8 setup at your place or mine? Either is fine with me. Don D. was intersted in watching and learning too.
I'd be happy to help you "rake" or strip your new acquisition.
I have the locker, gears & setup kit ready to go. I pulled the axle shafts & carrier from the housing. Pinion nut is off. Busted my cheapo puller tonight tyring to pull the flange off the pinion shaft. Going to buy a better puller tomorrow. After poping the flange off it's on to the setup.
BTW - I'll be by the shop before 6 for the table...
