i have a weird squeaking noise where my front drive shaft goes into the diff housing, could it be the pinion bearing? other than that i'm out of ideas. every thing else is working fine, fluids are fine.

Is it a high pitched squeak? Does it happen when you hit bumps? Turn the wheel? Move forward and backward? It isn't uncommon for suspension noises to travel through other components giving a false sense of where the noise is coming from.

Mark,
How did you determine the sound is coming from the front driveshaft? Possibly a dry rusted U-joint?

Unhook the front driveshaft from the axle and tie it up and out of the way.... go for a quick drive and make sure the noise has disappeared. If it has, then you know its most likely the driveshaft and most likely the ujoint. My front driveshaft has been going slowly. During the winter, whenever it was below freezing it would squeek like crazy for a few minutes before it warmed up in the morning. Since paragon, its been squeeking all of the time! Called a few places to get prices on rebuilding it - they want 250-350 to rebuild it. Called High Angle Driveline and a new shaft is about 250, so I may do that and keep the other as a spare. KEV

I stopped over to Marks tonight and took a look. There's some play at the the pinion yoke (lateral and vertical) which would seem to indicate a lack of preload and/or bearing wear. We're going to be installing some 4.56's early next month, so I'll know what it is when we tear down the axle. In the meantime, he's just going to use the P.U.

I found the same problem with my front pinion just before Paragon. However my D30 is 15 years old and has 150,000 miles on it! Added a shim to up the preload - good as new Kurt

well, i have not driven my jeep (used old truck) in a week and the noise is less noticeable than it was, still there though. i can not wait to do the ring & pinion swap. i did remove the front drive shaft (had it on stands) spun the tires, noise was still there, listened to where it was coming from, it was the housing.

well, i have not driven my jeep (used old truck) in a week and the noise is less noticeable than it was... That's what I do. I drive my YJ once a month at trail rides so all the noises that accumulate during the previous months' ride go away. It's like starting with a new Jeep

so after replacing pinon bearings in my front end i had a different noise. the cv end of the front driveshaft was howling at me. i brought my jeep to the dealership where i bought it, they took it for a ride, starter acted up took them 4 trys to start it (has been acting up since paragon),agreed that they both needed to be replaced, checked the warranty and covered them both. i love my dealer!!!
