Anyone know the what the distance is from the center of the axle tube to the bottom of the pumpkin on a Dana 60 and a GM 14?

I'll check my 14bolt in the AM for you. It's going to be more than a D60, but it can be chopped a little more than two inches.
IMO, 14Bolt > Dana60 ;D
Adding a new axle?

planing for the future. 14 bolts are under $300 and 60 are becoming $1300 +.

Hey, almost forgot about you... I measure roughly 7" from the center of the tube to the bottom of the diff. A 10.5" ring gear takes up some space. While it's about the strongest stock axle out there, keep in mind that a 14 bolt will add some major porkage to your TJ. Did you consider a 9"? The housing is light and strong and you can get a high pinion 3rd member. It's also 31 spline. I have one that I'd like to think I'll eventually put in the YJ. It was also $75. Something to consider...

If I ever go to a tire over 35" I was thinking of something in the dana 60 size for the back that is where the 14 bolt comes in. the weight could be a good thing, 400 pounds in the ringt spot.
I do like the idea of a hi 9 in the front, 9" with dana 60 ends, 35 spline axles sounds oh so good.
For now I am just thinking on the net.
Thanks Joe

The HP 9" uses a special ring gear that measures 8.8". It's not a true 9" ring gear.
The most bang for the buck..IMO would be an 8.8 out of an Explorer. 35" tires will not break it. In fact when Warn tested the 31 spline axles on it's axle strength machine, it did not break the axle.
Cheap, easy to find, disc brakes, and plenty of choices for diffs. And it's the right width and has the right bolt pattern for stock wheels.

Well, that's a horse of a different color....certainly not a Currie product.

I also have dana 44 front and back with chro mo axles. no need for an 8.8. I am think for the future and If I were to go to a 9" it would be a hi 9 with 60 end because the ball joints become the week link on a tj stile front end. It might be easier to lop the knucles off of the 44 and put 35 spline axles and an arb inside. Just day dreaming.
