So, I dropped in the Ford 8.8 last month. And I decided to be the nice guy & harvest the shafts from the old axle to carry as trail spares for some unlucky new guy who might be on a run with me. Step 1: Take off the diff cover, drain oil Step 2: Remove crosspin bolt & cross pin Step 3: Push in axle shafts to allow the C-clips to fall off the ends of the shafts... Or at least that's what I thought step 3 would be. It wasn't happening, and the drums really didn't want to come off either. So, how might you ask do you make the distance from the end of the axle to the center shorter? Simple! Grind out a chunk! At a cost of two grinding discs I cut the tube w/in an inch of the diff on each side. The 1/4 inch gap generated was enough to get the clips off, and remove the entire side of the axle, housing & shaft. Once that was done, a couple whacks with a hammer caused the entire housing to fall from the shaft. The other required a bit more grinding... Now at least I can hide the remnants of the axle in the back of the garage w/o the wife finding out. I figure I might salvage the brackets at a later date. Grinder:1, Axle: 0. -mike (Its also much easier to move a D35c when its in 3 pieces.... )
