Ok, got the Offroad cookbook out.
Seeking to find a suitable dutch oven to try some of this stuff. I would like to use it not just for camping, so I'm thinking the ones without the feet, but I like the lids that are flat to keep coals on it, which the ones without feet don't come with. Sigh. I think the feet would come in handy to have the pot sit off the coals, otherwise the pand is directly on the coals. Uneven cooking?
I'd like to use it in the oven at home, which is why I think the feet would get in the way...unless I position it just right, so as to have the feet land on either side of the rack.
Anyone have any input?
I think my mom may have one...maybe I'll try hers first.
These pans are pricey, so I want to ask before jumping in!

Kelly, We've been using Dutch ovens for a long time and make a bunch of stuff with them. I like the ones with the legs on it, but actually ran into a small problem while baking a cake in Minnesota. I needed to keep the bottom off the coals about 1.5"-2". I threw a grate over the coals to get a good height, but the dang legs kept slipping on the grate.
Kind of a funky situation, but overall, the feet come in handy, especially when serving.
Definitely get the flat top cover. Throwing a couple dozen coals up there cooks the food better and IMO, makes the food taste better.

Funny to you, unless it happens to YOU!
If this is the kind of Dutch oven that's out there, then that's happened for years on occasion.
Getting some good input all over the place. I think my thinking was correct, feet/flat lid/lodge/preseasoned.

Picked up a Lodge yesturday (gotta love birthday cash!). It's a 6 qt, 12", flat lid, with feet. Kittery Trading post has quite the selection of cast iron. Lodge looked better than the Texsport brand. Lodge has the longevity and is made in America...a plus these days.
