Hey all,
Just joined as a member and need to get a tire carrier for my 33" spare. I use my rig at work and am in and out of the tailgate all the time so dont want to put it on the stock carrier as it will cause problems down the road. Can you all recommend or not recommend a bumper/carrier from personal experience? Would also like to hear comments about powdercoating issues with the northeast winters/salt we get.
TIA, Jay

Warn bunper and carrier are nice and quit but the powder coating on all warn products does not last.

I like the Warn products too but want to mount the hi-lift so am not considering them. Plus I too read that the pcoating does not last long. THX Jay

If you have a TJ,
take a look at Safari Guard.
They have a carrier which put the weight of the tire on the bumper, but also hinges on the door. This makes it very easy to get in and out of the trunk.

Kevin,
I have an 05 LJ and have looked at SGard. I like the looks and all but I would think that puttin a big tire (>33" plan down the road) on that carrier and then opening and closing the gate with it attached 100% of the time would also put wear and tear on the gate. I know they make stout stuff for Discos, but I am not sold on the gate-carrier attachment. Also may put a 1" BL on down the road and I dont think it would work from setup now to then. Been lookin at Jeeperman, RockHard4x4, AtoZ, Custom4x4 TBT, and TKHFab to give you an idea. THX! Jay

I have the 4WheelDrive Hardware bumper & carrier. It's easy to install, sturdy, and the powder coating has held up well for the last 2 years. Very happy with it

I have a Custom 4x4 Fabrication rear bumper + tire carrier for my XJ... Standard powder-coating issues... They also make a bumper/tire carrier for a TJ/YJ... Kind of like the Warn, but for +$50 they will add a Hi-Lift mount that stands it up vertically. They have some pics on their site: www.custom4x4fabrication.com/rear_tj.htmlI've been very happy with the stuff I've bought from them... Very solid stuff (I also have a front winch bumper & rock rails for the XJ). It is a small shop, so you're not dealing with middle men. If you asked for them to skip powder coating it I bet they would reduce the price and you could paint it yourself. JW

ddewar53, is there a hi lift mount on it? Jay it doesn't come with one, but all it would take would be to drill 2 holes and run a couple of long bolts thru it, then pick up a couple of wingnuts to hold the hi-lift. For the price (Around $550), I don't think you can beat it.

Been lookin at Jeeperman, RockHard4x4, AtoZ, Custom4x4 TBT, and TKHFab to give you an idea. THX! Jay The carrier is rated for a 37" tire, according to the website. Lets say 50% of the total tire weight is on the door and 50% on the hinge/bumper. The stock tire is probably 40-50 lbs? A 33" tire/wheel is probably 70 lbs? So, 70 / 2 = 35 lbs on the tailgate. This is still less weight on the tailgate then stock, so I think it would be totally fine! The reason I recommended it for your application, is because you said you access it alot. I have a "typical" latch on my carrier used by many companies and its sort of a pain in the butt to use. Its much harder to have to undo the latch, swing open the tire, then go and open the stock door. The idea of being able to just open the stock door and it all opens automatically is really appealing to me. KEV

I've seen Don's 4wd hardware and I liked it.
I've had a Kennesaw (wouldn't recommend it)
I've also had a jeeperman, but you can not tow ANYTHING with that recessed hitch design they STILL have.
I now have the KOZ, but if I didn't have the LJ, I might not buy it again, I do like it, but it didn't line up as nice as it could have during the install.
I too like the warn, but have only seen it in mags, not in person yet.
Not sure if this helps you. A lot of guys on another board love the jeeperman, but if you ever want to tow a small trailer, forget about it.

Well I have the Rear Bumper and tire carrier/Hi lift jack combination from trailquest and I love it...* grade 8 bolts was all it took to install the 3 part combo on my TJ... and you can even put your big fat mother in law on it along with your 33" tire and hi lift jack swing it back and forth and it wont bend or twist.....very simple and HD construction... and the price was quite reasonable too! ive bought a lot from trail quest and I figure Ive saved quite a bit and I can sleep great at night knowing that they, like the German Tanks of WWII, over engineer their products..

Bullet Proof!
But big bucks though.
I have a front FS1 Bullet Proof off my YJ hanging off the Rubi and a new rear BP set up for the yet to be refurbished and installed swing-out tire carrier.
IMHO it was and maybe still is the best made.

Aren't they extremely heavy too Max?
We're running the Warn bumper/tire carrier on the Rubi. Bought it used for a good deal. The only thing I don't like about it is...no high lift mount. We are looking to remedy that problem though.

Stoney, Does the carrier have a pin to keep it open? That is one requirement I may have forgot to mention...I do like the trailquest...hmm Love the Bulletproof stuff too but man pricey and heavy! Aren't they 1/4" steel like tkhfab? Just found out AtoZ carrier does not have a open locking pin so they just got eliminated! So far Jeeperman is my pref since it has everything I need and I dont ever intend to tow anything with my rig other than pull out another stuck rig! No firm decision made yet however. All: thanks for the info!
